Youth & Spirituality

Youth & Spirituality : Finding Ourselves to Change the World

Spirituality is deeper than rituals, culture, and tradition (though those can form part of it). Spirituality is the relationship you have with your spirit, with others around you, and with a higher purpose. It’s about understanding why you are here, what you stand for, and how your actions ripple into the world. It’s personal. It’s real. And most importantly, it’s active.

Now, let’s talk about youth. Whether you’re 13 or 30, we’re all navigating that crazy, messy, beautiful stage of becoming. Everything feels like it’s moving at 200 km/h — school, careers, friendships, love, TikTok trends… you name it. But when young people tap into spirituality, they begin to see the world differently. Decisions stop being about clout or what’s trending. They become about meaning, purpose, and impact.

Why Self-Connection Matters

Being spiritual as a young person isn’t about constantly performing rituals or only wearing cultural clothes on Heritage Day. While those expressions can help us connect, spirituality goes deeper. At its core, it is about knowing yourself.

When you understand your values, your limits, your goals, and even your fears, life feels lighter. Choices become clearer. Friendships and relationships become deeper and more intentional. The most powerful part? You begin to live in a way that doesn’t drain you — it energises you.

Seeing the Bigger Picture

Spirituality gives perspective. Life isn’t just about homework, exams, deadlines, or chasing relevance online. It’s about the energy you bring into spaces. It’s about how your spirit interacts with others and how nourished your inner self is.

When young people think this way, society shifts naturally. Communities become kinder. Leadership becomes more responsible. Decisions are no longer selfish — they are thoughtful and sustainable.

From Reflection to Action

The beauty of spirituality is that it doesn’t remove you from reality — it enhances it. Reflection leads to clarity. Clarity leads to action.

When youth are spiritually grounded, they face challenges with patience, creativity, and empathy. They don’t just complain about problems — they organise, innovate, and build solutions. It’s not just about dreaming or praying. It’s about doing with purpose.

The Role of Spiritual Guidance

Even as you grow and connect with your spirit, guidance remains important. Learning from elders and spiritual leaders helps you move with wisdom and intention. As the South African proverb says, “Indlela ibuzwa kwabaphambili” — we ask for directions from those who have gone before us. Their experience shortens our learning curve and protects us from unnecessary mistakes.

In closing, I will leave you with a quote from my spiritual guider which reads as follows:

If we don’t know the past

We will be lost in the present

And never master the future
